newbie 72 burb?

new to forum.i am sure this has been asked and answered many times before.looking for a 72 with 4wd and auto trans project.very hard to find in the northeast.what would be "easier" to convert? 72 2x auto to 4wd or 72 4x manual to auto? money and space are tight. it would be for the road and beach no mud or rockcrawling. thanks for any input.

Re: newbie 72 burb?

Welcome to the board! Nice to see a local guy.
Going from 2WD to 4WD sounds like a hand full. You would need a donor truck for all the parts, front diff., steering box, front leafs, transfer case, etc... even the floor and front of the chassis is different.
Swapping out a manual trans for an automatic is no biggie. Like any simular swap u need to add a cooler and line, different shifter.

Re: newbie 72 burb?

It would be easier to convert the transmission, than to convert the chassis from 4x2 to 4x4.

4x4 67-72 Suburbans are getting harder to come by, and this forum I think is the best bet in locating one. All it takes is becoming a member, and then you can post a WTB in the classified sections. Non members posting WTB threads will only see the thread locked per forum rules.

Re: newbie 72 burb?

thanks for the replies. i had a 70 burb 2x a long time ago, and a 72 k10 pickup after that, also along time ago. both great trucks. looking for a weekend beach truck (had to donate boat, rotted transom). i did think that the 4wd manual to auto would be the better choice. does anybody know of any threads for this swap? i know engine size is a factor, but just a general idea of what is involved,(cross member, linkage, pedal box, steering column, etc). street smart i live on the island but work in greenpoint.

s-k helped me out awhile back with a k&n airfilter for a 73 yamaha r5/rd350/rd400 project thats still in the works. i see a guy in pawly with a nice truck but no title. gone are the days where you could get a title with no hassles.

Re: newbie 72 burb?

I have a guy who can get you a title/proof of ownership (for older cars). It take about 31-35 days and in total about $350. He comes to you and does a Garagemans Lein. Takes a little over a amonth. Let me know i can PM his number.
