np440 my6 4 speed transmission help ..

HI everyone. I am usually in the mid sixties truck group but you guys probably know more about these trannies since they came in the mid 80s trucks.. I have an aluminum np440 4 speed overdrive out of a 84 truck that I want to put in my 65. I am in the middle of putting new seals her but have hit a snag. When I put the side cover back on with the new seal it seems it is not right. I have all the gears except for od i think. I am using the factory shifter and everything is hooked up right but it seems something inside has moved. All the forward 3 gears are great as is reverse , but she jams going into 4.. Syncros are perfect , gears perfect . I kinda think a gear has slid over some kind of clutch on the cluster or something. Need help on this one. It has been hard for me to talk to anyone about this because no one knows this transmission.. I read somewhere that if you somehow engage overdrive with the side cover off you will have a lot of trouble putting the side back on. I am afraid that has happened... help.....
