stub shaft?

Looking at an '86 6.2 diesel Suburban 4x4. Seller says passenger side front needs a new stub shaft for the 4wd to work properly. What would cause that shaft to break or go bad aside from normal wear and tear? How intense of a job is it to replace this? Is there anything else related to this that could be jeapardy?

Four wheeling will break em. Bind up the tires, big tires, big power, etc. They don't just break. Doesn't sound like you know what you're doing with a front axle, so read a members 10 bolt rebuild thread.
Its just a couple more steps after the wheel bearings. I have gotten to where I can do it in less than an hour. Maybe better if the weather is nice.

Your exactly right I don't know anything about 4x4 systems, never owned one but want to. Just looking at some different trucks right now. If you can link that thread or else I'll just hunt for it, thanks.

I can tell you what breaks stub shafts.... My suburban with the original 10 bolt front with stock 4.10 gears and 38.5s tsl's trying to pull out my brothers suburban lol and for the record yes it was foolish but we didn't realize how stuck it was until a 8 tire tractor of massive size failed to pull it out and it was dug out by a trakhoe that almost got stuck so....... lesson learned avoid coal pits.
