Project Gordo

I found a Chevy C-30 crew cab that was for sale. This is a truck that my dad and uncle has owned and its been in the family for years. This truck has been sitting for about 7 years. a Chevy 350 powers this truck, but the original was a diesel. Truck has a 14 bolt full floater rear end, and it should be equipped with a TH400 transmission. I purchased the truck as it sits in this picture:

Since then, I have put a used set of tires on it because the old ones were obviously toast, and cleaned out the junk that was in the cab / bed.

I got the vehicle towed (could not find a trailer or dolly big enough to tow it myself).

I installed a starter, put a new battery cable in, cleaned out the mouse nest from inside the air filter, checked all fluids, and dribbled a little gas in the carb and it started right up.

I have been reading many forums on these trucks and have been thinking out ideas for this truck. I think I will enjoy wrenching on this thing for a while.

Re: Project Gordo

BTW the trucks name came from my uncles family. It stuck since i was a little kid when it all started. Its the memory's I have of this truck that got it rescued from a field. I thought it was too good a truck to sit and rust away.

Re: Project Gordo

After spending a few hours in the engine bay, I was able to get the truck running much better (on 7 year old gas that is). I found where the idle is controlled on the 4 jet carb. I loosened everything up so it now moves freely and works properly. After today's work I am very happy with my $500 truck.

Here is a video of it running when warmed up:

Re: Project Gordo

Looks like i had a productive day with the truck. I was able to drive the truck down the road. everything seemed to work well engine ran well enough for being on very old gas, trans = perfect, power steering = perfect, lights: all but one tail light, power brakes very nice with a bit of squeaking. I drove the truck down the road 2 times now. The best part was that it fits in the garage with about 2 inches to spare on either end.

(I know messy garage)

Re: Project Gordo

I was able to pressure wash most of the outside of my truck. There isn't much light outside when I get home so I was practically doing it in the dark, so I wont be surprised when i find i missed a patch. To get the water off, I decided to take the truck for another short drive and I found that the 4dra-jet carb only has the first 2 barrels working. Ill upload some garage pics shortly. Hope I have more daylight to get in and de-grease the engine crossmember etc...

Re: Project Gordo

Great truck man! I'm a little confused though because everything about it says it is a 73-74 and you said it originally had a diesel but diesels didn't come out in these trucks until 1978 and even then you could only get it in a half ton....

Really clean though and l can't wait to see it dropped.

Re: Project Gordo

Thanks. Not sure about the diesel thing. I am going by what I was told. I think the 350 motor that I currently have is from a 1978 by the smog equip that's on it, and the sticker on the air cleaner.

Re: Project Gordo

That looks like a good project, I am starting to enjoy the crew builds on here.
I may be burned at the stake for this, but that ram looks good.

Re: Project Gordo

Minor update: Today I was able to get all 8 of the bed bolts out. only 1 spun in place, but it was the hardest to get at. I ended up grinding the 3/4 nut off and punched it through. I fixed my tailgate so it now opens and closes properly and I took of the brushed metal cover that was on it. I like the look without it. I found these in the door pocket:

Thanks! I have read through your build ... twice. I like your truck and will probably be using it for reference often.

Re: Project Gordo

Any interest in these pre-smog crew cab trucks in the central CA area? No$ = no progress for me.
