How fanatical are you about your bed wood?
I have really nice looking oak bed wood with the polished stainless strips and I'm afraid to get it wet. I don't want to wash the truck or let it get rained on. I don't want to haul anything either, especially my dogs. My wife is pissed because I won't use the truck "as a truck". That stuff cost too much money to go mess in' it up.
What's the consensus here? How does everyone deal with cleaning the truck? Am I just weird? Posted via Mobile Device |

Hate to say it, I am with your wife on this one. It's either a truck or a big piece of jewelry.
As for the oak planks in my wood bed, I haul whatever I want, even large landscaping rocks. That said, I do take precautions to prevent damage. Such as laying down heavy tarps or load onto a pallet. Also, I hit the planks with some sandpaper, steel wool, and then re-apply the stain/poly each spring.

Cut a piece of py to fit the floor,you may need two hinged in the middle.Then cover the bottom side with carpet and the load side with bedliner or somethhing.If the floor is too nice for that,get a trailer.

Back in the days of snap on tonneau covers when "furniture wood" beds were very uncommon we did a tonneau cover and padded bed liner set the guy used for exactly this sort of issue. Wonder how well an externally padded ABS style bed liner would work for you? Used as drop armor for the entire bed interior.

If its finished properly I wouldnt worry about it getting wet, it will dry and be fine. As far as hauling stuff, maybe a small trailer is in order? Or like others said, get another 67-72 with a steel floor to beat up!

All great ideas. I had thought of the rubber bed mat idea but don't know how to protect the bed sides and top rail (from the dogs). I could always hog tie them and lay them on their side! Hehe. Has anyone installed that chrome looking diamond plate material on the bedsides? I saw some at Lowe's today that was real thin maybe 1/8" thick. Obviously just for show not for go.

I've only done really fine bed floor jobs on a few show trucks years ago. I got away from those and only build trucks to look good being used or at play. If I leave one natural I use an oil,not a hard finish that will scratch or gouge. I have thinned out paint to a stain,also. On my '67 I am considering using old weathered wood. Depends on how I do the rest of the truck. I like a tonneau cover on a truck with a wood floor.

I had the same problem as you Steve, I solved it by buying my wife a Jeep J10, that is our hauling rig now.

I've got a small trailer with a tilt, that hauls about anything I need it to. Cost me $200.00 and new bearings but well worth it.
