What do I need to ask for at the clueless parts counter?
Go look in the yellow pages and find a small, independently owned parts store.
you want a place that has a counter and stools in front of the counter.

Avoid AutoZone, OReileys, etc.
NAPA is usually pretty good, or the independent places, or the non-chain places.

You're looking for a place that, when you walk in and say "I need a water pump for a small block Chevy," the only question they ask is "Long or short?"

Ask them for a short TO bearing for a '65 Chevy.
