Metric VS SAE Power Steering Pump

I have a metric saginaw pump off a 1985. Unfortunately I am using a short water pump and want to insure that the brackets are the same for the SAE and Metric Models. My question is: are the metric pumps identical to the SAE pumps other than the threads and hose fittings? Also does somebody have a link for alternator and psp pump brackets that will work?

Re: Metric VS SAE Power Steering Pump

I have both laying in my garage and they are the same outside of the connection for the high pressure hose. You can even unscrew that fitting and swap it with the other style (move the spring too).

The pumps should interchange, but as Chevy Mike said, you can swap the pressure fitting. Just be careful, there is a spring inside. As for the alternator and PS brackets, what engine do you have?

Re: Metric VS SAE Power Steering Pump

There is a little plate that seems spring loaded behind the fitting but no spring in the fitting. Did I allready lose it? So my metric pump is the hydroboost and the third fitting hits my frame. Going to grab a non hydroboost model and swap to the metric fitting as that is what my power steering box is. will my old pulley fit? any other problems you guys can think of?

Re: Metric VS SAE Power Steering Pump

There are two pulley types, one that has a keyway and nut and the other is a press on pulley. If you get the pump with the same pulley mounting setup, then yes, your pulley will work.

Re: Metric VS SAE Power Steering Pump

one more suggestion..get a inline filter for the low pressure side....its about 1/4 inch diameter and slips inside hose....cheap insurance
