Emergency brake adjustment

Can some one measure the length of the bolt and where you have the cable guide on the threaded bolt. Talk about the very first cable that runs from the cab to the frame. I know I will have to fine tune it but I want to get close the first time.

Thanks

Re: Emergency brake adjustment

You won't find two that are the same, It's going to depend on how worn your brakes are and how they're adjusted at the drum. That said mine is about the middle of the adjusting bolt. I adjusted my brakes at the drum so they just started to drag then I took all the slack out of the parking brake cable, checked the p-brake lever position when depressed to make sure they worked with the peddle half way down.

Re: Emergency brake adjustment

AirSpeed has it right, and if I remember correctly the manual says to set the pedal at 4 "clicks" and then make your adjustments until there's drag on the rear wheels.

From my '72 Service Manual:

Raise the rear wheels off the ground.

Apply parking brake pedal 1 notch from fully released position.

Tighten the adjusting nut until a moderate drag is felt when rotating the rear wheels.

Fully release parking brake and rotate the rear wheels. No drag should be present
.

Additionally, this procedure is located immediately AFTER the procedure for adjusting the brakes. In other words, it is dependent upon properly adjusted brakes to begin with, as Airspeed has said.
