clutch springs & question
Anyone know where the springs under the truck can be sourced? I have the long spring from the fork to frame but I'm apparently missing a short spring the goes from the fork to bellcrank.
Also I just got done installing a new centerforce 2 clutch/pressure plate, had the flywheel resurfaced, new throwout bearing and pilot bushing. I can't seem to get the clutch adjusted right, it feels ok but catches kinda high and if I shorten the rod any more the clutch fork starts to wobble around at idle. The throwout bearing chirps until the pedal is pushed in slightly as well. is the missing spring causing this or do I have bigger problems? I had the pressure plate on and off the flywheel a few times as I have a 12" clutch disk and the lock washers were hitting the the disk. Ended up getting new lock washers and that took care of that. Anyone have any insight here? |

I don't remember a short spring from the fork to the bellcrank but could be remembering incorrectly. I buy all my stuff right from GM. As far as the spring under the dash. All there is is the big heavy spring. I don't run that spring on mine. It gives a more even pedal. Not that over center feeling when you push it. You be able to get the pedal to grab wherever you want it by adjusting the rod between bellcrank and fork. I shoot for around 2 inches of free play on the pedal before it starts to engage. Not sure if this is an accurate number or where I even got it but it works for me and all trucks I have worked on at my shop for the last 20 years. I know it's not exactly the answer you were looking for but hopefully it helps a little. Maybe some else with better specifics can help out. Cheers!

I just bought some springs at Lowes and found one that fit for the one that goes from the fork to the bell crank and the long one you can buy at the Car and Truck shop in Orange, CA, they have a website. There is a spring that goes on the pedal under the dash, I think I got mine from The Car and Truck shop or from LMC

I know there is a retaining spring on most everything old between the bell crank and the fork so I figure squares are the same. It will hold the adjusting rod tighter and keep it from falling out if the adjustment get to far out (result of not adjusting it for many miles). If the throw out bearing is noisy until you put pressure on the pedal that meams it is hitting the pressure plate which is not good. It will cause the throw out bearing to wear out in short order I generally adjust the clutch be feel from underneath and I am feeling for the TOB making contact with the fingers on the plate and then back it off to ensure ample clearance. It will generally yield me anywhere from .5 to 1.5 free play at the top of the pedal depending on how tight the minkage is. As it gains clearance I know it time to adjust, not that 2 inches is necessarily wrong or wouldn't perform properly, it's just more than I care for.

Thank for the info guys. Turns out the fork was touching the tb at rest so I backed that off and it feels better and the noise is gone. I was missing the fork to bellcrank spring so I had it adjusted so the rod stayed it place before which was causing the fork to hit obviously. It seems like my pedal return spring (long one under the truck ?) needs some adjustment now too as the pedal felt good but doesn't come all the way back up now.

I just tightened up the return spring a bit and I think it feels worse... I have to lift the pedal the rest of the way up unless im shifting into nuetral and can let the pedal go fast enough for it to return by itself.
