55 chevy car rearend?

From what I understand it's a good replacement for my 53 3100 as far as fit but is it a good replacement as far as strength and gear ratio.

Have a stock 216 with future plans for a bigger straight 6...250, 261 or 292 possibly.

Re: 55 chevy car rearend?

I'm glad you asked this. I was just thinking the same thing yesterday because I know where I can get one and I also heard they fit. I plan to use a 5.3 though. Good luck on your build and I hope someone answers you.

Re: 55 chevy car rearend?

Since you are asking, I'd like to throw out the same question, but for a 3600 instead of a 3100.... I'm thinking the gearing alone would be great, but will it hold up the old girls rear end?

Here's something I found the other day when looking for what fits what. I doubt it's a complete list, but it covers quite a few:

Re: 55 chevy car rearend?

If you have one and it is complete it will work
,
I t is the same rear end i have in my 62 Corvette and I beat on it quite a bit.

There are alot of gear selections and very easy to change the drop out center section, and can be done just like a ford 9 inch, BUT no where as strong. they are the same from 55 to 64 (center sections) but can be pricey if you want Posi traction.

In the mid 6o's I had a 409 4 spd dual quad and the higher gears that were not posi did not stand up to my punishment as the spider gears were the weak link.
Just make sure all the parts are there!
