I don't know what your system requires on the other side of the firewall for replacement options, but I would try to run the lines down to the frame and do the connector as far under the the passenger fender as I could. That's a thing I have - I prefer to bundle lines and hide stuff as much as I can.

Look at the sheet metal overlaps. I ground off the excess along the left and right sides. In my case the gate interfered with the bed posts and even with the trimming it still is tight.

My fix? I found a nice used OEM gate and I'm going to replace it.
