Exhaust Flange Bolt Delimma Help!

Working on my 66 c10. It's not "road worthy" yet, as I still need to tackle the electrical so I have brake lights, so I've been doing the work I can do in the driveway. The old muffler was shot and the exhaust was hanging low and rusted. I tried to remove the two bolts that hold the flange to the exhaust manifold and they sheard off. I was expecting that I guess. My question is, would it be easier to take the manifold off and have my local shop get the studs out? or should I just wait until I have it ready to drive and then take the truck down and have them work on it in the shop? Would I have any luck getting the mainfold off without the bolts shearing off? Thanx very much for your input.

I would suggest removing the manifold and getting those broken studs out by whatever method works, either by yourself or having it done at a local shop. It’s going to cost a lot more to have the muffler shop fix the studs since you’re going to be paying them for disassembly work rather than focusing on building the new system.

Also the risk of breaking the bolts holding the manifold to the engine is very low compared to breaking the studs connecting the exhaust pipe. The manifold bolts are threaded into the cylinder heads (not the manifold) and they are also much larger so they rarely snap. Exhaust flange bolts by comparison snap routinely. Over the years they become brittle from the heat and also become fused in the threaded blind holes.

Thank you very much. Before attempting to remove the bolts, should I use some pb blaster of heat the engine up?

A good soaking of PB Blaster or ant good penatrating fluid never hurts. Give it some time to soak (overnight) then start removing bolts from a cold engine. Just my opinion.

A little heat with a torch, will help as well. There's many types of penetrant oils that work well too. If you can get it off the truck with out more damage its a lot easier to fix

Thank you for all the input. Is removing the exhaust manifold a pretty straight forward job? The intake comes off as well correct?

its best to remove the intake with the exhaust manifold still attached i have been in this boat as well since one of my flange studs was too short i eventually got them out but then the flange cracked so i bought headers

Would help if we knew what engine your working on. On the 230/250/292, you have an integral intake/exhaust. On a SB/BB, you have seperate intake/exhaust manifolds.

it must be an I6 as he mentioned 2 bolt flange

Very true Ron, an oversight on my end. Sorry and thanks. So to answer the question then...yes, the intake will come off with the exhaust manifold. They can be seperated (only 3 bolts). Although I have seen some SBC 2 bolt exhaust manifolds...was why I asked. Some of the LS engines use a 2 bolt flange also.

that looks like a 265 manifold on the left. I remember those
