4 speed help

Pulled the side cover to change the fluid out. There was quite a bit of 'goop' in there that I managed to clean all out.

Now I'm having trouble installing the side cover back on. Does the trans need to be in neutral to get the side cover on? Will I be able to spin the output shaft when it's in neutral?
With the truck on stands, I can no longer spin the output shaft.

Can someone explain to me how to get the side cover on. This has taken up my entire weekend and I gotta go to work on Tuesday.

Pictures help.

thanks!

Re: 4 speed help

As long as you haven't moved anything in the trans, you just need to line up the shift forks with the syncros, and it should slide right in and bolt up. It's been so long since I've done this, I don't remember if it needs to be in neutral or not. With the trans in neutral, and the rear tires off the ground, the output shaft should turn.

Yes, you need to be in neutral and the shift forks will slide into position without much trouble. Also, yes you should be spinning tailshaft in neutral. If not, check your trans from inside (since you have the cover off) and ensure that gears are all spinning when you think you're neutral.

Re: 4 speed help

thanks everyone. Got it working. One of my synchros was jammed but I got it fixed and drove to work today. All is good.
