Thumbs up Advice for someone new

I like old impala's I own one, I know 73-87 chevy trucks good. I'm looking to buy 67-72 what's the price of one in driver cond in the Midwest?

How do I find what engine options were year by year and paint options along with changes through each year. Before I buy one like to know what to look for in these trucks I like a solid driver as stock as possible and 2 tone preference.

What's the best way find them at bargain prices Craigslist seems to have some decent ones? Any advice be great I know the 73-87 good but these I'm learning and who better school me but Chevrolet guys

Re: Advice for someone new

Welcome to the forum! And ya gotta give me a hint WHERE in NW Indy... (I'm from Gary originally, and also spent a lot of time in Hobart/Merrillville area).

Engine opts as follows (sorry, don't have 67/68 info, but generally just add in the 327 thru 68 and you get the idea).

69-70: 250 & 292 (6's) 307, 350, 396 (8's)
71: 250 & 292 (6's) 307, 350, 402 (8's) ...... 402 replaced 396 (402 is a .030 over 396)
72: 250 (6), 307, 350, 402 (8's) ............ 292(6) is dropped from the lineup in 72

Notes: 350 and 400 (396 and 402 all name-plated as 400) received engine callout on the body: 69-70 under the fender nameplate / 71-72 under the side marker light.

As for colors, here's a link that will show you what was available and also a few pics of some years' color charts:

As far as advice - it all boils down to what floats your boat and/or what you plan to do with the truck. Just like 73+, do you want a swb/lwb, step/fleet, 1/2-3/4-1 tonner, etc. Then trim levels... 69-70: Custom, CST, etc or in 71-72, Custom, Custom Deluxe, Cheyenne, Cheyenne Super (in that order low-to-higher optioned).

Again, welcome!

Re: Advice for someone new

I wish I would have asked this before I bought my truck. If you want originalish go with the 71 or 72, they have disc breaks and a wider rearend than the older years. You also need to decide if you want coils or leafs, they made both and coils ride much nicer. I have a 69 gmc with leafs and it has taken time and money to convert to coils and discs, not original. If I were to do it again I would buy a 71 because 72's have inner door skins like the 73-87s and I like the older interior look.

Just my opinion, but do some looking around here, the build threads and the suspension forum and you will find the things you like, dont like and can live with. good luck and welcome to the board.

Re: Advice for someone new

EXCELLENT point on the disks brakes coming available in 71 - if you like a 71/2 grille as much as a 69/70, then I'd recommend the 71/2 also- if for no other reason than disks.

I don't live in indy anymore, currently in CA. Very familiar with Highland. Folks still in hobart, sister in griffith, and some nephews bouncin around there somewhere.

Re: Advice for someone new

First Welcome to the site a wealth of info here from mild to wild. The thing to look for is rust sometimes they look good until you start digging into them. Craigslist or E-Bay are great places to start but you want to see it. . The biggest rust areas are the rockers and a lot of times the inside floor will be rotted out and the rockers will look good. Look real good and climb under them to check the cab also look for rust in the roof in the corners by the windshield under the gasket. go through the Project threads you will find a lot of info. As far as price you can pay as low as $1500 for one that needs work to around $6000 for one that is decent, your budget and ability will guide you. If you can swing it look more south than north as you know SALT. Good luck in your search.

Frank

Re: Advice for someone new

Yeah Highland and Griffith are decent towns I like Blue Top on 41 I take my 1963 Chevrolet Impala there sometimes drive around here is fun.

That's out my range looking around 2,000 at most limited budget. I have had cars brought shipping can get expensive but its worth it.

The rockers are the main problems how about the cab corners? Anything look for when looking at a frame. I prefer orig as I can get love the history in these. Didn't know the 70s models built that much better why I come here.,

You guys are good answering questions

Re: Advice for someone new

The older ones (67-70) are built just as good. They just are harder to find with the more desirable modern options such as PS, PB, auto, AC, etc. Seems like most were manual everything and also, just being older, they've had more time to rust and degrade. Many actually prefer the all steel grille and styling of the older ones. You can get interesting options like speedwarning, buddy buckets, wrinkle finish glovebox doors, more classic steering wheel, and the oldschool door panels on the highly optioned 67's and 68's. Also a late 70 has the wider rear axles. As for the disc brakes, not a big deal to upgrade to them, but its another cost you want to consider. The 71 and 72 are the most practical if you want a daily driver.
