Axle widths?

Can someone please tell me the two different axle widths from backing plate to backing plate on the early 69 and the late 69 axles? Thank you in advance.

My mom always had the best advice. It was just a tad late. After a fall that involved blood, she'd say....."Careful!"

Re: Axle widths?

I believe that 67-70 12 bolts r the sAme width. The change came in 71 when they switched to 5 lug. Those r 1.5" wider than the six lug version

A quick measurement on the chassis in the garage is 58" and that is a 5 lug. So a six lug pre 71 would be 56.5 ".

Ask me how I know the difference

Re: Axle widths?

67-69 and some of the 70's are 1.5" shorter than the 71-72 the 67-70 will be 6 lug but axle is still the same length thee later 70's are the wider ones like the 71-72 are.. I just went through this.. I've got a 69 6 lug truck that I'm putting a 71-72 5 lug into.

We ain't scared,,,, Build thread,,,

Re: Axle widths?

Here are the axle part numbers covering "C","K" and "G" trucks. Gives a lot of information and shaft lengths/spline counts to match up those sitting unknown in the corner.

Looks like the '70 C10s with disc brakes without the 4 speed or 396 were equipped with the wider 71-72 5-lug axle.

Re: Axle widths?

my 70 had the wider axle, all you have to do is change the shafts from a 5 lug axle to convert it not the whole axle, if you have a bad shaft and want to keep it 6 lug you can get one out of a 4x4 from the seventys and use it,

Re: Axle widths?

So a few days before the autorama that my chassis was entered in I got my axles that I ordered new for a 72. I had done lots of work on the rear by adding sway bar mounts and disc brake stuff. I then had it powder coated with everything else. So when I put the new 72 axles in they stuck out oh about .75". I was very mad and confused. I was able to locate a 72 12 bolt that day and got it repowdercoated and made the show. I still have the 68 diff that is all powder coated in my garage that will never get used.

That is how I found out.
