Billet Carrier Bearing Question... - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

After lots of reading and research I determined there were 2 different carrier bearing for our trucks, each depended on slip shaft diameter. I assumed that 1/2 ton were the smallest of the 2. I bought a Billet Carrier Bearing for my 71 GMC 1/2 ton off a board member and it to small to be pressed on the shaft.
What gives?

as far as I know the two different diameter bearings had different mounting points. thats the style my 1/2 ton (1970, 350/th350, 2wd lwb, 12bolt) came with.

But now it has a SM465 and a 3/4ton driveshaft with the big carrier bearing and 1350 series u-joints

that's the only way to go.

Mine too! But this one is 1/8 +/- to small. Must have been for another series truck and not 67-72. No part number on it anywhere. Bad thing is I've got 85.00 bucks in it.

No, it is for the 67-72 trucks, I bought it from CPP earlier this year. I even called them to make sure it was the right one before ordering it. The part # for them is CPPCB. I have a 67 1/2 ton longbed with the light duty 2pc driveline. I ended up upgrading to the HD driveline due to my hp output and transmission choice... which is why i was selling it. i never installed it, but it measured out fine with the mic when I measured it for my truck. I know my diveline setup was the original as I am the second owner of the vehicle..

I too have an un-molested truck. It must have the heavy duty driveline in it. It is a leaf spring rear end. I wonder if that is the difference?

I thought the 2 were different depending on if you had a coil spring vs leaf spring rear since they mount to the frame 2 totally different ways.

Well that just may be it then. The original mounting bracket isn't on my truck. I knew there were 2 different mounting styles. I "assumed" either would work. Thanks for all the info guys!!! I think I'll be listing this for sale!

I have the coil spring rear end... I dont know much about these era trucks with the leafsprings... so I can not attest to the differences there, the HD setup i upgraded to was also off of a coil spring.... but that takes a completely carrier setup. Sorry its not going to work for you...

Just out of curiosity what is th od of the spined portion of the shaft where the bearing slips on? On your shaft.

The one pictured is for a coil spring rear which attaches to a mount along the top of the rear crossmember. The leaf spring mount straddles the lower part of the rear crossmember.

My HD shaft is 1.34" and my LD shaft is 1.15" just for reference

He is correct in the statement that that bearing mounts to the top.

If this is the case that the leafspring takes the bottom mount, then your shaft measures the 1.34" and needs the HD carrier bearing that looks like this

Just a suggestion but if Adam still has the reciept from CPP he could send it to you and maybe you could swap it out.
