1998 Yukon Heat/AC

I'm usually on the 73-87 side but had a question on a 1998 4 door Yukon. I'm looking at a potential purchase and the one I'm looking at does not have rear air. It only has 70k mileage and appears to be pretty sharp. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet in person. My main concern is will the heat and air keep up on the inside? If any body has personal experience I would appreciate the feedback. Thx!

Re: 1998 Yukon Heat/AC

It's a good question. I once ordered an '88 Astro, that had dark green and tan exterior, but mostly the dark green. I ordered front and rear AC and was happy that I did, because of the wife and 5 kids. It seemed to do a good job. I'm thinking that the Yukon is close to the same cubic volume as the Astro, maybe a little less.

So, I can understand your concerns. We've all had some hot weather this past summer and I would hope the AC worked on that GMC.

Have you checked it out, at all? I think at this time, you just want to know if the front ac is enough to handle the whole vehicle. My best guess is that it will create some cooling throughout, but may fall short on a hot day or when you have a vehicle full of warm bodies. If those bodies are comprised of menopausal women.....then you probably wouldn't have enough cooling if you had a dozen ac's in it.

I'd check it out and try it all to see how it works beforehand, if possible. Compressors are easily gotten and one troublesome area on these vehicles is actually the motor/gears that operate the blend doors. I had to replace my compressor 4 years ago and then replaced the Shrader (fill/charge) valves this past spring....wouldn't hold a charge.

Re: 1998 Yukon Heat/AC

The way I see it, if the front only a/c was enough to cool the whole Yukon or Suburban sufficiently GM wouldn't offer a rear air option. Having had a Burb with rear air and white in color I'm sure I wouldn't have been happy with the front only air.

Re: 1998 Yukon Heat/AC

Thanks guys for the feedback! I did a chance to go look at it this weekend. I have to say I was impressed with how tight it was, it drove nice. It's been garaged kept but the two passenger doors have been the recipient of several door dings, looks like it probably set too close to the other vehicle in the garage. I'm thinking I'll probably pass. My guess is they will have a hard time selling it with no rear AC. If the price was right I might take the chance.
