Lets see your stepside bumpers
I'm having trouble finding the right configuration for my stepside rear bumper. The previous owner gave me these brackets but I don't know that he ever connected them to the truck.
I've read other threads who said that one of the two brackets per side should be on each side of the frame rail. I can sort of get things to fit, but the bumper sticks out WAAY to far and they just don't look right. The few pictures I've been able to find show that some people have a very different looking bracket setup than I have. Does anyone have a setup like this, and could share pictures of how their brackets attach to their frame? Also, pictures from above to show the distance that the fender sticks out would help alot. |

Re: Lets see your stepside bumpers
Your brackets look like the hard to find factory originals. The brackets on my 1960 are the aftermarket type formed from heavy steel strap. In your photos they seem to be oriented correctly, as the holes on top of the arms are for attaching the splash shields. I had to fabricate angle brackets to bolt the splash shields to the brackets.
Here are a few photos that may help with how far mine hangs out from the back of the truck:

Re: Lets see your stepside bumpers
I'm sorta resurrecting this old thread. I am back to working on my 66 step side, and just can't get the rear bumper to fit well at all. I'm wondering if I have fleet side brackets... Are they longer than stepside versions?

Re: Lets see your stepside bumpers
Here is a pic showing the brackets as rear ward as they can go. I'd hate to cut them down if they are originals...

Re: Lets see your stepside bumpers
Can you post a picture of the first bolt to the frame? I just put a set on and you may have yours backwards? There is a bolt that lines up with the notch in the bracket. I need to get off my butt and go to the garage and look though...

Re: Lets see your stepside bumpers
Ok...Not backwards but mine go in a lot further than yours. The notch on the bracket is lined up so the first bolt goes through there. The side bracket bolts to the first bolt on the other side of the frame. I bolted everything real loose and tightened a little at a time so it would all come together. It was kind of a PITA...Helps to have another set of hands to move stuff around while you loosen and tighten...

Re: Lets see your stepside bumpers
Thanks mouth for your help on this. It is going on a factory 4x4 shortbed chassis. Maybe that's the difference. Here is the shot I think you asked for.

Re: Lets see your stepside bumpers
Was there a difference in brackets between a dress bumper and one of those big ugly 200 pound step bumpers?

Re: Lets see your stepside bumpers
I am not sure what is going on there...I have aftermarket brackets and they are a bit shorter in the rear. They also go through the cross member and use the back holes in the frame. Have you tried bolting on the bumper?
