Cheep Wipers for Ol John Lee

Being cheep or thrifty or mechanically inclined to adapt or what ever ya wanna call it, I just can't see spending $28+ shipping to have spanky new chinese knock off 64 chevy windshield wipers. Specially when there are good American made products to adapt and I can practice my other passion, keeping the money I spend here in my County and NC as much as possible.

So, recognizing that everything on these old vehicles was made to last or made to be rebuilt, lets rebuild two wipers for $7 with American supplies and keep the money in the local parts shop here in town.

A pair of 7mm break to fit refills. They come in 6 to 8mm width and the rubber is all the same. I scrap what I dont' need and all I need is the rubber so width is immaterial...those parts are not used.

Pic here is the two Tryco break to fit refills behind the original Chevy wiper blade assembly.

The old blade rubber slides out of the metal carrier and the new rubber has been disassembled from the break to fit metal parts and then trimmed to the proper length. Here the new bare rubber blade is in the foreground of the photo with the old blade sliding out of its carrier groove.

Just a pic to show the new rubber blade sliding into the metal carrier, nearly full seated at this point. Original locking clip is standing by for reinstall on the carrier.

Rubber is all in and locking clip installed. Lather, rinse, repeat and both blades have new rubber wipers locked in place.

Here they are, carriers in the wiper arms and ready to ride the glass smoothly. Don't know which wiper arm is factory but I suspect its the one on the passenger side...bit of chrome gives it away...brushed model on right appears to be an aftermarket and requires the modern style arrow clip to retain the carrier - the left one dosn't need the arrow clip, its edges fold down over the carrier trapping it in place. Hmmmmmm, junk yard friday for a wheel and a visor and a spare carb so maybe another wiper arm to match.

Hmn... but do they wipe water worth a hoot and stay on the arms, in the rain?

That has been my issue with the parts store refills on my '65.

They wipe best on the passenger side where I have the original wiper assembly. The replacement wiper assemblies like on the driver side do not follow the windshield well but at least wipe the portion I look thru just fine. As soon as I find an original wiper for the driver side, it'll be perfect. And both stay in the wiper assembly perfectly, no issues in several months of driving and use.

The passenger side arm has the correct Trico head. I use the same refills for a few years now w/no issues and the wipe great.

Ditto for me, I don`t think Sharps has the correct arm on his truck, mine lay parallel with the windshield gasket...
