87 VIN issue???

My brother has a 87 swb 4x4 that the vin tag and the emission tag both show to have a 305. But the rpo sticker in the glove says it has a 350. Which is right?
The truck is original and appears that the engine has never been out, the truck also has original paint.
Thanks

Re: 87 VIN issue???

What are the codes in question? RPO code that says 350 and what is the VIN number?

That might help narrow it down.

x2 - agree. A little more detail would help.

Photos of the VIN tag, emission label and SPID would be great.

Keep in mind it's very easy to swap a glovebox, so check and verify the SPID goes with the truck you have.

Good point. Verify that the VIN on the glove box matches the VIN of the truck. My first take, I would think it's a 350. I thought the 305 "phase" was in the early and mid 80's. 1987 was the first year of the fuel injection and the engines I'm aware of were 350's.

Re: 87 VIN issue???

Yes - 305 was available in '87 as RPO LE9 (EFI/TBI).

Re: 87 VIN issue???

The vin code is H for 305 as is the emission tag. The vin on the spid matches the the vin on the truck but the spid list L05 = 350 tbi.
This truck is a original fairly low mile truck that doesn't appear to have been messed with.

Re: 87 VIN issue???

I agree that H is the VIN code for the 305; I also agree that L05 = 350.

So - are you looking at the correct character in the VIN?

Position 8 is the engine code; Position 10 is the model year (which happens to be H for 1987).

Where does the emissions sticker attach (air cleaner? rad supt?)? Perhaps one of those components has been changed -

Re: 87 VIN issue???

H is the 8th and 10th digit. The emission tag is on the radiator support.
I run a collision shop and moat of the time i can tell if body parts have been changed. This truck doesn't apprear to ever have had a wrench turned on it. Everything on the engine is original best i can tell.
So is it possible that even with the vin and emission tag saying 305 but the spid saying 350 that it does have a 350?
Also i think all of the 305's in 87 came with a 3 speed trans and 350's came with the 700r4. This truck has a 700r4.

Re: 87 VIN issue???

What about finding the block number? From my armchair research, it's located on the block, driver's side, back, on top of the bell housing flange.

Here is a site that might help deciphering it:

Block casting number would eliminate any guesswork.

Re: 87 VIN issue???

A few years ago I was trying to find out what engine was in my 89' K5. I found the following info on my block:

So the numbers I could find:
Front passenger side just behind AC compressor - V1112UKA
Under side on block cast - 683
Under side on block towards the top -
627
56
N

The answer I got was:

V1112UKA

V = built in the Flint plant, 11 = November, 12 = 12th day of November, UKA = 1981 350 con. cab, m/t, A.I.R. P LF5 150 2 C-30 & 3500,159.5WB

The P LF5 is the partial VIN, the 150 is the HP rating, and the 2 means 2 BBL carb.

I think this site was used for part of the number above:

http://www.nastyz28.com/gm-chevy-cod...s-suffix-9.php

So basically, I guess I have an 81' block in my 89' Blazer.
