1 ton dually 454 4x4 questions
I have a 1992 one ton dually that I got in a trade deal as it was going to be scraped, but I was interested in the 454 motor.
After doing a little research on line I found that this truck should have a gen V motor which is an OK engine but nothing special, being the first of the one piece main seal, non adjustable rockers and the fuel pump mount is now gone. Heres the question??? As I am working to remove the motor I notice a couple of things that make me wonder?? 1) This truck has no power brake booster, instead it has a mechanical one run off the power steering? (Thought this was only on diesel trucks?) 2)There is a fuel pump boss with a block off plate on the side of the block??? Is this a gen V motor? I can't get at the casting numbers on the back of the block and there is no ledge on the front of the passenger side head like the old motor that gave the motor ID number. Also wondering if this will have the 4L80 transmission in it and for 1992 it should still be non electric? Any one have more info on these trucks? I am more familar with the 67-72 and 73 to 87 styles and the older motors. Read that the gen 6 had the fuel pump boss back on the motor. Thanks for any info you can give me.

The power steering pump is called a hydroboost and is a good thing if you pull a bunch.

As stated above the unit on the firewall is a hydroboost unit and all HD chassis packages with the 454 engine had them and ALL c/k3500's had them.
As far as I know ALL 4L80's were electronic. |

Re: 1 ton dually 454 4x4 questions
4L80E is the easiest to identify, it has a good size waffle pattern cast into both sides of the bellhousing, can't miss it. IIRC, the 454SS was available after '91 with this tranny?
Unless it's a crate Gen 6, it won't have a fuel pump boss. How many bolts on the timing cover? That's the easiest way to identify a Gen 6, they only have 6. |

Re: 1 ton dually 454 4x4 questions
if the truck is a 92 and an auto trans it will have a 4l80e. no other auto options were available that year.
