Shipping a frame?

I'm in the process of waiting for a shipping quote to get a bare frame for a short bed shipped from Missouri to my location in Southern California.

I'm waiting on a bid from Uship. Anyone else ship a frame before or have any idea of the best way to get it done for a reasonable price?

I'm afraid the cost of shipping will out weight the deal on the frame.....

You could always check with a mover like Mayflower, or long haul trucking Co.. stand it up side ways...Its going to cost..either way.

I would rent a uhaul and go get it....see some country and save a few bucks

MO to SoCal and back ? That's a lot of
country at $4-$5 a gallon !

will most likely cost more than the frame cost you....unless it is a bare frame, and could be shipped freight.

Prob. gonna run you about 600-700 shipping. Uship will also prob be the cheapest way------but you may end up with some ding a ling driver too. Anyone who can drive a truck (pickup) can work for uship.

Even if it was wrapped up for freight style shipment, will still probably run you close to 1g to get it here in SoCal..

There is also a cat in Arizona selling a bare SWB frame with C notches already installed for $350 on the 67-72 parts board right now...smokin deal and close enough for a road trip to boot.

Thanks for the craigslist find. I never found it in my search. Guess I shouldnt use the word c10 in my searches!

What is the best way to measure and make sure the frame is straight? I have a spec sheet, but think it would be hard to measure with cab and front clip on the frame.

Cross measure the frame rails (front of left side to rear of right side, and front of right side to rear of left side) The measurements should be the same. I would not be surprised at all to find the numbers to be different. After 40+ years of use most frames have some kind of tweak to them. With the cab and clip on the frame you would have to get creative in taking your measurements, and hopefully be able to crawl underneath it.

Trucking companies usually charge by the volume it takes up along with weight, but mainly space. I had a frame trucked up from the southeast for a truck I restored for a customer. I had them cut the crossmembers right in half. Wrap the frame rails together and cut the cost in half. But if you could find something closer that's always best. You can't find anything half way decent up here in New England. So we have to get creative!
