Install new transmission

Is it very difficult to change out transmissions or should I have someone do it - Obviously I would rathere do it myself that's half the fun - saving the money is the other half

Re: Install new transmission

Not a very hard job. Disconnect driveshaft, some clutch linkage, unbolt from bellhousing...enough of us here to help out. Might as well throw in a new clutch if you are replacing the trans...just my two cents worth.

Re: Install new transmission

If you go back with the same trans. It is about as easy a job as you can get for replaceing a trans. Like C-10 says, drop the drive shaft, disconnect the shift rods. Remove the lower flywheel cover. The 2 lower mounting bolts come in from the inside. Remove the upper bolts & if you are fairly stout get under it & slide it out. I used too pull them that way but I'm old & weak so I have to use a jack. You dont need to undo any clutch linkage. You can look up into the house ing & see if the clutch disc is wore out. It should have grooves on both sides. If the linings look good & it works good ther is no need to replace it. Spin the brg. on the TO brg. If it makes any noise it needs replaceing.

Re: Install new transmission

Ok I'm going for it - I'm sure I will have more questions - but you guys sure have all the answers - I live in the DC suburbs so getting parts is a pain - I should probably buy the clutch parts and do the whole job once and get it over with - So it may be a week or two before I tackle this job - I'll be back

Re: Install new transmission

My son and I just pulled the one out of our c-10. It really helps to remove the tranny hump and work from above. He lifted it out from up top and the t-5 will go in that way.
