Vin on frame

I was told that the vin number wasn't stamped on the frame rail pre 1971 on 2wd and 4wd is this true? I'm looking at a 1970 and the body's vin is a 4wd I'm just curious to know if the frame had a vin stamped on it to see if its a real 2wd frame or a conversion. Thanks for the help

Re: Vin on frame

Mine is easy to see on both side of the frame, about even with the door.
I've heard, but have not looked, that the VIN is stamped somewhere around the steering sector as well.

Re: Vin on frame

I will take a peek this weekend on my trucks. My 72 has it stamped in two spots. I will try to see if it's also stamped in the same spots on my 70 frame.

Re: Vin on frame

I have a 70 shortbed 4X4 and the partial VIN is stamped on the frame. It was there also on the 70 Burb I recently sold and it is on my 71 Blazer 4WD.
The entire VIN is not stamped on the frame just the last several digits of the VIN. Usually found on the top of the driver's side frame between the steering box area and firewall. This isn't going to tell you whether the Blazer was a factory 2 wheel drive. Your VIN will start with a C if it was a 2wd and a K if it was a 4wd. For example, KE181sXXXXXX would be a 4wd V8 Blazer (the 2nd letter "E" a V8, the 4th number"8" denates a Blazer). The XXXXXX would be found stamped on the frame. If it began with a CE it would have been a 2wd V8. CS would be a 2wd 6 cylinder. I have only personally seen a couple 2wd Blazers. The couple that I have seen were originally factory 6 cylinder vehicles by their VIN (CS). If the partial VIN on the frame matches your VIN tag then it would have originally been a 4WD.

Re: Vin on frame

2wd frames are different from 4wd frames; wider on 2wd ahead of the diff for coil springs (4wd are leaf springs).

I would say if the partial VIN's are not there, then someone ground them off. Every frame that came off the assembly line should have had 2 partial VINs stamped on the LH side top of the frame. One was by the steering box and the other was located basically under the drivers seat.

There are a few documented cases where the partial frame VIN and the VIN plate on the body didn't always match from the factory because the body and frame got out of sequence on the line. But they were usually only off by one digit.

Re: Vin on frame

As mentioned above, my 69 has the partial vin stamped on the frame by the steering box.

Re: Vin on frame

Finally found it between tranny crossmember and trailing arm cross member buried under what looks like factory undercoating that is all over the bottom of the tub and it was correct.
