What socket for 4x4 service?

Hi guys. I just picked up an 86 for my winter truck and need to replace a ball joint. What 4wd socket do I need to get the hub apart?

Thanks in advance!

It's a special deal for that truck, I don't think I paid but a few bucks for mine. But it's listed as a front hub socket for 73-87 4x4 GM trucks.

Would this be a common auto zone/advance/napa tool?

They're easy to find. I think they're called "Spindle Nut Tools". AutoZone might rent them.

There are 4 rectangular tabs, did you take the hubs all the way apart to the spindle nut? there are is a small snap ring that you have to get before the hub can be removed

Re: What socket for 4x4 service?

I have the snap ring off the end of the axle shaft and it appears there is a gear like thing that is slid on the axle. Does this need removed before the socket can be used?

Re: What socket for 4x4 service?

I found out the hard way on how to work on these hubs. Luckly parts were cheap and plentiful and the tool could be rented though I was given one. Good luck and keep'em nuts tight. Check'em regulary.
