Rule#1 if it aint broke dont fix it!

Well I broke rule #1. I decided that I didnt like the gear i had in the rear end(3.73) and I wanted a change . I also thought hum I have replaced just about every peice of the suspension why not rebuild the rear end also so I did the smart thing first I went to my buddy's junk yard and got a rearend out of a 72 modle that had the gear I wanted (3:07) took it to a friend of mine that build rear ends and said build it . The complete bearings and seal ran me about $100.00 and the labor for him was a buddy price of $100.00 so I get home last night from work pull the old and in with the new . After about 2 hours I pulled the stands out from under the truck and went for a drive . How did the drive go ?Not to good! real bad whinning noise . so I parked the 71 and drove the old fathful s10 to work today got back home tonight and pulled the cover off the rear end and I found gold . Little gold particals all in the dope . I'm taking the rear end back tomorrow to see what happened. Life sucks when you brake rule #1
Sorry Just had to gripe a min.

You'll probably hate the 3.07s once you get it back on the road. The only time they are cool is on the freeway. In town they completly suck.

I never did care for the 3.07 gears, 3.73s alway gave more "giddyup". For a good all around gear, a set of 3.42s will give the best of both worlds.....you have good perf, & decent milage. the 4.10s are really low in my longhorn with a 28" tire, but that 6th gear makes up for it on the road. (at 4000rpms, the speedo needle is straight down) crazyL

3.07's do suck bad.....i have them and i hate it. My truck still hauls a$$ with 3.07's....i would LOVE to see what it would do with some 3.73's and a bigger cam

Even on the freeway they aren't that cool......3000rpm gets me about 75mph, and i don't like to push my small block past that 3k mark for hours at a time (fuel mileage drops alot). They are good for 60-70mph confortable crusing w/o overdrive though.

i agree yellow72 .... i dont like to push mine more than 70 for any extended period of time .... my 350 burns alot more oil @70 mph then it does @ 55 or 60

i can deal with having 3.07's .... becuase i hate being passed all the time on the highway...with a 3.73 or 4.11 ... i would be to afraid to rap the engine out that much to keep up with traffic ....

ramble on

I went with a Currie Ford 9" but didn't want the 3;73 so I went with 3;50 . I love it . Big change from my old 3;07's

Well Its midnight here in Georgia and rear end is back in the truck I will drive it tomorrow and I hope its fixed. The mechanic told me that the new crush sleeve was taller than the org. and it didnt let the outer pinion bearing seat all the way and causing the pinion to walk up and down . I hope that he is right. We installed another new bearing ,the org. crush sleeve and checked the wear pattern and the backlash . I will have udated pics tomorrow also of the new wheeel I put on tonight.

sounds to me like the backlash is probably too tight

The back lash is perfect . I watched him and he took a dail indicator and measured the back lash . he ran a pattern and he told me it may be noisy on decell and if it was to bring it in Monday .
