78 cheverlet 4x4 axle swap

I am swapping from manual to automatic locking axle. I was wondering could I use my original transfer case (which has hi- 2 wheel drive -lo- lo loc) with this automatic locking axle. I have the orignal transer that has hi- hi lock- lo- lo lock. Just wanted to get some other in put. I would like to keep the original in. If any one can give me some in put.

Thanks

Basically you have manual hubs now and will swap in an axle w/ out hubs but has drive flanges and came out of a full time 4wd truck? If your present TC has a shift pattern of (from seat forward) 4hi, 2hi, N, 4 low then I'd say no. Your front rotating assembly will be turning all the time in 2wd and your TC was not made to work like that. Now if the axle being sawpped in has "automatic" hubs then yes because you can disengage them by shifting into 2wd on the tc and backing up 15-20 feet. And then when you shift into 4hi or 4lo then after a few turns they'll lock automatically.

The only thing i know is the axle that i want to put in does not have manual locking hubs. I `m hoping that they are automatic locking. The tc that goes with it has from to seat to front 4hilock-4hi-n-lo-lo loc. The tc that is in my vehecle now has 4hi-2wh-lo-loloc and hubs that you have to turn on the axle to engage in 4 wheel drive. I did not want to change my tc and to just swap the axles.

That axle sounds like a full time unit w/ drive flanges. The automatic hubs did not show up until the 80s. Why not get automatic hubs and install those? You could probably get a set for under $50.
