Help with engine ID
I was wondering if anyone can help me ID my engine. My truck is a 69 C-10, on the engine pad forward of the passenger side head my stamp is MG21400. Does anyone know what this stands for? I can't seem to find any info on this stamp. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks! |

Re: Help with engine ID
That's a suffix code but I'm not seeing it on the chart I use...

Re: Help with engine ID
The first digit of the engine suffix code was the plant that produced the engine: V for Flint, Michingan, and T for Tonawanda, NY. The next 4 digits were the month and date of engine assembly, and the last 2 were the "suffix code" that told the exact application of the engine. What you posted doesn't follow the correct format; double check the code and post back, because I don't think I've ever seen a suffix code that starts with "O"

Re: Help with engine ID
There is something wrong with the code that you have posted. As mentioned the suffix code is at the last of the stamping not the first.
I have seen similar stampings like this on engines that have been decked and the builder stamps his initials and the date in the cleaned off pad. Jim

Re: Help with engine ID
Ok I double checked, the engine stamp I posted IS correct. I found an engraving/stamp on the block above and to the right of the water pump. I drew up what is looks like in paint, its a "MG" stamp with a "WE" looking engraving under it ... Maybe this will help with the ID?
Thanks! |

Re: Help with engine ID
Ryan, Hello and welcome to the board. My best guess is your engine has been rebuilt and when it was, the block was decked. I think after the rebuild the rebuilder stamped his stamp on the motor.
So let's hit this from a different angle. Can you get the casting number and the date code for us? The casting number is located on the engine flange that the bellhousing bolts up to. So is the date code. The casting number is on the driver side and the date code is on the passengers side.(top rear of block, back by the distributor). Here is a pic of locations for casting numbers and date code.

Re: Help with engine ID
Ok, I climbed up into the engine bay today after work. On the drivers side rear it has a casting of "Hecho En Mexico 3970010". There is also a casting clock with a "D" and "N" on opposing sides of it. On the passenger side there is a casting of "F1478" but could easily be "FI478" or "FT478".

Re: Help with engine ID
Ryan, that's a 1978, 350.... The block was cast in mexico on june 14 1978. The 3970010 could be 2 or 4 bolt main. It's a good block.
date code= F1478 F= june 14= 14th Day 78= 1978

Re: Help with engine ID
Jay, TJW is the code your after. I have it listed for 5 different years. In 71 and 72 it is a 307. In 73, 74 and 80 it is a 350. Check your date code to be sure.
