It's not a one wire alternator if you have one wire to battery power and one additional wire. It's a two wire alternator.
The smaller wire is connected to ignition power through a voltmeter or charge indicator (bulb) originally. You can connect it to a resistor, a diode or a bulb if you prefer. Don't connect it directly to ign power as you could destroy the alternator.

Out of curiosity is it like either of these?
