Wheel help!!!

Well long time lurker first time poster.
Finally got my one ton. 1988 one ton 3+3 with 6.2, th400, NP205, 14, 60. Came with 4.56 gears. Just like the CUCVs i was looking for.
Ok. Heres the deal. Ordered my suspension from ORD. 4inch shackly flip and 2 inch block for rear. Front Tuff country 6inch springs with crossover steering and New PSC two wheel drive box. Also new kingpin kit due to having death wobble on the way home with my new toy. Well i have all the suspension figured out but i am having one heck of a time trying to decide on what wheels and size i want to get. I am thinking 16x8 with 315/70r16 hankook dynapro MTs or toyo mts in the the same size. I had also though about 16x10 rims but don't really like the look and want the tall skinny look. Am i ok with 8 inchers? Also 37 inch tires may be in the future for this truck to help out with the axle ratio. I would still like the wheels to stick out a decent amount to offset the lift kit. I was going to go with Mickey Thompson Classic IIs with the 4 inch offset. Any one know if there is another heavy duty rim with the same pricepoint with either less offset say 3inch or that is made in 8.5 or 9 inch?
I know its alot to digest and might be confussing but i am freeking out about what to acctaully do! If anyone has any pics of any of the wheel combose i mentioned please post them. I will try and get some pics up of the truck in the future with a build page. Have lots of plans for the future.

Thanks
Brent

Re: Wheel help!!!

Came with some older 235 tires. Not bias. The tires almost look rounded (bubbled out tread) on the truck now. I am now considering going with wheel vintiques series 82s in the 16x8 and finding some hubs (stock steelies in an 8 inch width with 4 inch backspace). Need to find out which will be stronger, the 82s or the Classic IIs. Opinions? I suck at decisions!

Re: Wheel help!!!

Well, with 6" springs you are gonna have a truck that is lifted 8 inches. The frames on 1 tons are 2" thicker than 1/2 and 3/4 tons. So for one, a 315/70/16 isn't even a 35, in less you meant a 315/75, which is basically a 35" tire. But if you want a tall skinny tire, I'd go with a Q78/16. They are little over or little under 36" can't remember. They are skinny, calls for a 7" IIRC. But, you really should go wider as you get taller. It will be more stable on the road when some jackwagon pulls out in front of you and you swerve from running him over. Also on the trail if you go on any angles. Steel is always gonna be stronger than aluminum.

I know it's not the same style truck, but this had 36s on 8" wheels, roughly 6" of lift. ( I miss that truck )

Re: Wheel help!!!

b454rat.

Really like the look of that truck. Thats the look i want. Thought about the Q78s but didn't think they were strong enough for loading the truck down or pulling heavy. Otherwise the perfect look. Do you thing they would hold up? I was thinking E load rates would be best? Starting to lean further twards the 8 inch steelies. You are correct i ment 315/75r16s not 70s. Working on deack last night did me in.

Re: Wheel help!!!

They are 6 ply so guess it depends on what your loading/towing. Might have to keep an eye on tire pressure. If it's hot, then ad some air. Dunno how to compare E with 6 ply.

Re: Wheel help!!!

6 ply is C rated, 8 = D, 10 = E

Re: Wheel help!!!

went a different direction and ordered pro comp 52s with the 2.5 backspace(16x8). Have the narrow wheel with a width close too if i ran 10 inch wheels. shouldn't have any fit concernes. Only concern was 4WP where i ordered from called and tried to convince me to not get them? Said they where special order and would take 6 weeks!! Damn I wish they would have had that on the item when when i ordered! Well i figured on waiting and convinced the guy that was what i wanted. He kept trying to talk me into a 10 inch wheel. Sounds fishy but i hope i am happy with them. Gunna suck running the 235 tires with the lift till then.

Re: Wheel help!!!

first impression of the new rims and tires. AWESOME!!!!!!! Looks like a bad @ss military truck. Well it kinda is!? No death wobble since i put the right bushings in the springs and put on the steering stabilizer. Crossing my fingers though! Now just have to worry about the engine crapping out. Hopefully she holds up for a few years. 383?

Cummins

Glad to hear about the death wobble getting fixed. I was thinking about ditching my Ion 16x10's and MT Baja Claw Radial 38x15.50's for some of those Q78's and steelies after I remove my body lift.
