carrier bearing...anyone else with this problem

Basically what happens is the carrier bearing gets pushed forward as the bracket bends. This causes the front driveshaft to lift and the driveshaft to vibrate a little. I think the carrier bearing bracket is too weak, so I'm going to redesign my own.

Does anyone else have this problem? What did you do?

I think my bracket may have gotten broken/weakened when I dropped a drive shaft....I don't know for sure.

Check to make sure your rear shaft is sliding freely on the front shaft splines. If not this will cause the whole shaft to move toward the front when rear axle rotates up under a load which could be the cause of your problem.

I had problems keeping the carrier bearing together with the old 350/350 combo. I am hoping with the new set up that the driveshaft length will be short enough to go to a one peice. If not, I was going try one of Inland Empire's bearings (as I will be using their driveshaft) and was going to fab a stiffer bracket like you suggested.
they show a yellow poly bearing on their website but do mention a red "stiffer" bearing they have also.

Well until today my drive shaft wasn't sliding like it's supposed to, but I fixed that, and it still does it. Maybe that is what weakend the bracket though.

I am getting vibration usually when under a load especially when it is cold out. I don't have vibration under normal driving conditions usually otherwise. I think it is a carrier type problem but am not sure. My carrier is new. I need to check on the sliding part that could be my problem. I think these carrier are flimzy for what they have to do. Vibrations are really aggrevating. Does Impire Bearing have a web address 68LSS1?

The 1/2 ton carrier bearing they sell must be modified to fit on our trucks. I have one on mine, but it requires some machine work to get it to fit. It cost about $75 btw.

Just make sure the driveshaft is balanced and not a problem. With a 2-piece you can get weird symptoms. I got mine balanced and a NAPA carrier bearing and have'nt had any problems since.

The part the bolts into the bracket on the frame is to wide to fit into the bracket, so it has to be milled down on both sides. I have some pics of what you have to do, but I am not able to attach any pics on the board. I can e-mail them though.

I just posted a new thread that all of you might be interested in, called "Possible solution to carrier bearing woes."

Thanks for the info neonlarry, I know what to expect then when I get it. I am ordering the 2 piece drive shaft with the slide section and carrier from them tomorrow, I may go with the oversize driveshaft.
