71 Cheyenne restoration
I am new to this site and I wanted to get some advice about my truck. I will post some pictures later today. I have a 71 C10 Cheyenne that is in fair shape. When I bought the truck it wasnt running and it had been sitting for a while. I replaced the Carb, spark plugs, vaccum advance, fuel pump, fuel filter, points, and bam the truck runs, a little better after I got the timing right its got a 350 with the th350 trans. My main concern is the rust, mainly because I have not done much body work in the past. I have a few ideas for her, but I wanted to get some ideas from y'all.

Re: 71 Cheyenne restoration
from the Heart of Arkansas!
Bodywork.....the bane of our existance. The newest versions of the 67-72's are now essentially 41 years old. Normal wear and tear, mud, snow, coastlines all add to the possibility of rust. Rockers, cab corners, cab mounts, inside of the wheel openings, rear quarters....all are subject to rust. The inner fenders, especially beneath the battery are prone to rust. The radiator support panel is another place to check. The kick panels are especially prone to rust, causing water to leak into the interior. The cause is dirt, leaves, pine needles, etc., that accumulate in the plenum after passing thru the grille in front of the windshield. There have also been numerous cabs that have rust in the header above the windshield. So, check carefully.

Re: 71 Cheyenne restoration
Well if you truck needs the normal stuff replaced because of rust an dont have the money to pay somebody to do it , you will have to ask your self how much you want to do ? most stuff is fairly easy to do if you have a few skills . Where I live the local college has a body shop course you can take during the evenings an you can do it yourself . I took an autobody course several years ago , an used what limited weilding skills I had an learned to do it myself. An now have a nice 70 chevy pu to show for it , no its not a show truck compared to many but I did take it to shows an can say I did it myself.
alot of people on here are willing to help , either with advice or in trade , or just plain help when they can . ENJOY AN HAVE FUN ! |

Re: 71 Cheyenne restoration
Welcome. I bought my truck, and was in the same position as you. Never done a days worth of body work, or welding. I just decided to suck it up and get to cutting and measuring. I replaced the outer cab floor/inner rockers, outer rockers, and cab corners. I am happy with the results, and it sure beats the cost of having someone else do it.
