Question Locking Fuel Cap

Hey all,

I have a "new(previouly ignored)" issue on my 71 build. the locking fuel cap that i purhased from chevyduty (will link below) Leaks. When i go around a corner gas pours out of the fuel cap. We found a "non vented fuel cap" from a 72' parts truck that we picked up awhile back, and that does the same thing. Any suggestions to not leak fuel every time you make a turn?

the cap i purchased is http://www.classicparts.com/1938-71-.../#.UJqKBYaz6o8

Are you topping off too much gas when you fill up? LMC sells a locking gas cap. Maybe you could try that as well.

Re: Locking Fuel Cap

Got my locking cap from NAPA, p/n 703-1113, no leaks. It's actually my second cap from them, the first lasted many years before the seal finally rotted and gas started sloshing out on right-hand corners.

Re: Locking Fuel Cap

Guys-this looks just like the cap i took off of the 72 donor truck, it did not in fact seat itself correctly on the 71' . I will go to napa today or tommorow and compare the 2 caps....

I think I tried this gas Cap. Does it move up and down once you turn and tighten it? Seems like the one i bought was a little loose once you turn and tighten It. I'm having a hard time finding a cap that fits correctly. Locking or non locking.

It doesn't turn at all, you just press it straight down onto the filler neck and two tangs lock it in place. Internal spring(s) keep outward pressure on it to maintain proper seal. You can press it downward against the spring(s) and it will push back up as you take your hand off it.

The first purchase I made after I bought my truck in 2001 was one of these gas caps and it stil on the truck doing its job. My reason for buying the locking cap was I didn't want someone to steal my gas or sweeten the gas with a little sugar or some other foreign material.

Re: Locking Fuel Cap

Paint's faded on mine, but I'm pretty sure I have that cap as well on my 68. I haven't noticed any leaks yet.

Re: Locking Fuel Cap

I tried that exact locking gas cap on my truck because original leaked on right turns. That cap leaked worse than original so I put a seal about 1/4" thick over the gas cap seal and it doesn't leak anymore.

Interesting, glad you could fix it! What did you use for the thicker seal?

Re: Locking Fuel Cap

I work in a hydraulic shop and it is just a basic rod protector seal we have that was the right size to fit the cap. It takes some effort to get the cap on now but it doesn't leak

Re: Locking Fuel Cap

The only thing I hate about that cap is that it says Made in May-he-ko.

Re: Locking Fuel Cap

I got a locking cap locally from KMS. It's prob the same one as LMC would have. It's shiney chrome and rounded and looks good. I have the one from napa on my 78 and it's ugly. Neither of them leak any fuel. The one from KMS seems a little weak on the sealing department, but so far it's not leaking any gas

I have the same situation on my 71. Same cap on both my 69 & 71 but had leaks only on that truck. For now, I found a plastic cap of some type that fit over the filler neck and the gas cap goes over it. (acts like an extension of the rubber gasket) I tried to glue it in place but that horrible ethenol won't allow that. It stopped the leak for now until I can figure out a better plan.
