87 suburban 2wd project
Hey guys i am glad i found this place so much info. i have a 2 wheel drive 1/2 ton suburban that i love..lol i just like the 73-87 trucks. it has the stock motor and tranny i am looking to install a new motor. tranny was rebuilt about 10,000 ago and is in good shape. i am looking at the gm crate 350 that jegs sells for 1299.99 260hp and 350 ft/lbs could i take this motor and install a larger cam to give a bit more power? on my truck i have tbi so i would need a good intake over the stock one. the truck already has headers and flowmasters on it dual. i want to do the motor first then work on the inside some of the pics i have seen on here have me fired up and ready. last thing is gm makes a 350 ho that is 330 HP @ 5000 RPM, 380 ft.lbs. Torque @ 3800 RPM but at 2259.99 I want power but on a little buget is saveing up to get that motor better in the long run. give me some ideas

oclocker,
Welcome to the site. It always good to have new guys on the forum. I would suggest you shop around and get your best deal on the GM HO 330 crate motor. It can be had for less than the 2295 price, and it is the best bang for the buck going out there...

welcome to our addiction, please take the time to fill out your profile (i.e location). if you have the time and money it is always good to do all mods before you drop the motor in. if you like the tbi keep it, if you would rather not have a computer controlled vehicle, go with a carb. fuel injection is great, but sometimes i dont like all the computer stuff...

Woo hoo! Another 1/2-ton 4x2 Sub...
Make sure that you're looking at the correct engine. The GM long block that lists for $1295.00 is usually the one used up through 1985-- 2-piece rear main seal and old-style valve covers and intake. 1986 was a one-off year with old-style top end and new-style bottom end. 1987+ used the new style bottom end-- 1-piece rear main seal, different flexplate bolt pattern. It also used the center-bolt valve covers and TBI intakes. Just thought I'd point it out in case you missed it. Good luck!
