Can I shorten the fueler neck on my LMC gas tank?

My '70 GMC needed a new gas tank so I got one from LMC. When installing it I found that the fueler neck sticks out about 1 inch past the rubber grommet. The tank fueler neck has crimps and I'm wondering if I can take a
2X4 and put it on the end where the gas cap attatches and tap it down with a hammer to shorten it. Has anyone tried this before?

I doubt that will work very well, my stock tank in my 69 sticks out past the rubber alteast that far, my 70 has a LMC tank and it sticks out that far as well.
