4x4 guys, I need some info on transfer cases

Ok my 82. Use to be a diesel but now gas. Guessing the engine tranny both changed but unsure. It goes into 4x4 but grinds and when you try to take it out, it grinds. A guy that was going to buy the truck said it was just a ink age problem. What else. It goes in 4x4 but grinds putting it and taking it out. It's. TH400 tranny,, but not real sure what the transfer case is.

I posted it on the 4x4 page but got no responses, but after retreading it , I would not have what I was saying eather I'm actually trying to sell this truck and need to get this fixed

There might not be anything wrong with it. If you just lightly push on the shifter they will grind. You have to do it with one swift and deliberate motion.

4 low can grind are you sure you are going into 4 hi ? Also would be good to know if it is a 203, 205 etc might help the diagnosis. The first pic is a 205 in the truck and the second is a 203 out of the truck.

On my turbo 400/ np203 it grinds too when I shift the transfer case even with trans in neutral. Don't think anything is wrong with it it has always done it. I andjusted the linkage it shifts better but still grinds. I just shut mine off shift to 4x4 and start back up and go.

Kris, I don't know if its original, the was a diesel. One of the PO put a 350 in it. I will get under it later and see what it is. I didn't know the grinding was normal in these things

Re: 4x4 guys, I need some info on transfer cases

You know I guess I should have added that its not just like a grind, like putting a standard shift in gear, it's like the gears are SPINNING. It's a fast grind

Re: 4x4 guys, I need some info on transfer cases

Your truck "should" have a NP208, easy to tell the case is aluminum. Grinding into 4lo is not out of the ordinary. Is it grinding when in park or driving?

Re: 4x4 guys, I need some info on transfer cases

The linkage could very well be messed up. My truck did the same thing, it was like the truck wouldn't shift completely out of 4-wheel drive. Look under the truck and adjust the linkage accordingly. Does yours have a body lift?

No , no body lift, I also need to remove the high hump and recut the hole in the floor. I don't even know why the high hump was put on it. The hole in the floor is not right and seems like the shifter hits it a bit

At one time, there was probably a 4speed in it. Hence the need for the high hump.

Be very careful when shifting a 203 into "loc", the planetary ring is a weak link in those things, especially the lighter duty "stamped steel" ones.

All 4x4's and all standard shifts (4x2 and 4x4) had a high hump. Regardless of whether your 4x4 was an automatic or standard, it came from the factory with a high hump. Otherwise your cab would never clear the transfer case without at least a 2" body lift.

I look under mine and the regular size hump is still there. You can tell the high hump was added but the rest of the floor under the high hump was not removed
