fuel pump swap
The fuel pump in my dad's 01 Silvy is bad and needs to be replaced. Is it easier to drop the tank or remove the bed? Also, what's involved in removing the bed?

Re: fuel pump swap
depends on how much gas is in it close to empty drop the tank full pull the bed, make sure to use an ac delo or gm pump as the aftermarkets dont last long 6 months to a year max what i've seen in my shop.

Re: fuel pump swap
It's about 1/4 tank. How hard is it to drop the tank in a driveway with no lift?
What's involved in removing the bed? Thanks for the tip on using stock parts. We would be buying from NAPA, which usually is repackaged stock units, so I'll make sure before buying.

Re: fuel pump swap
napa fuel pumps are made by airtex same as most aftermarket pumps, any denso, dephi or ac delo will work great, bed is like 4-6 bolts and the electric connectors. fuel tank is like 4 bolts and the fuel neck , maybe a floor tank and 2 guys

Re: fuel pump swap
It was easier for me to raise the bed than drop the tank...This method isn't recommended, but I was doing this by myself and this was the only option at the time..I added more supports after this picture though..lol....It worked great, and gave plenty of access to the pump....8 bolts for the bed...a couple for the filler neck...and unplug your tail-light harness...IIRC, I picked up a new AC Delco pump from evilBay for right under $200....

Re: fuel pump swap
agreed on the brand...i had mine replaced in my 2002 tahoe with a generic brand, and a year..maybe year and half later the gauge started screwing up again (which is why i changed it anyways). wish i wouldve went with the high dollar one. oh well, its parked for sale now lol

Re: fuel pump swap
Thanks for the advice. We ended up pulling the bed. It wasn't too bad except for one of the bed bolts getting stripped and had to be cut off. Changing the pump that way was a breeze.
We also got a new pump from our local dealership.
