Stuffed Her With Wood

Whoa ... easy fellers! It's getting cold and my lovely wife wanted a fire! That still didn't sound right.

Replaced the 42 year old worn out rear coils on my 70. One of the springs had already collapsed, 3" lower than the other side.

I decided to keep it stock height because I use the truck in the woods and need the clearance, plus my 69 is dropped if I need to scratch that itch.

I went with Moog variable rate coil springs Part No. CC603. Very impressed! The ride when empty is nice, and it handled great when loaded with a bed full of Oak. Pretty neat, these are my first "variable rate" springs and I like them.

Anyone else work their ladies? What works best when loaded down?

Re: Stuffed Her With Wood

No pics, but yes I do work the old K20 a few times each year getting firewood. I used to have sideboards and have hauled quite a few full cords of green hardwood. No sideboards now and I'm doing good to just fill the bed, maybe a bit rounded above the side rails. Wife & I are slowing down some as we get older, y'know....

Besides the obvious good tires properly inflated, I have rear AALs. Also recently replaced the axle-mounted coils with Hellwig overload leafs.... wish I would have done that a long time ago.

Re: Stuffed Her With Wood

Looks like what you did works fine. That's nice looking load of firewood there. Mine's a 4wd w/leaf springs and I just load it like it was intended. You can't hurt these good trucks...at least not the way they came. I've built show trucks but now I won't own a car, truck,or motorcycle I don't use. I grabbed this stuff when the county roads crew cut some along the road back in August:

Re: Stuffed Her With Wood

LOL ... yeah I bought the wheels of craigslist in a pinch because they still had good tread. They were cheaper than replacing the rubber on the old steel 15" Rims.

Over the last month those 20's kinda grew on me because they fill up the wheel well. A little too much chrome for me, probably have them sprayed when I get the truck repainted.

I have herd leaf springs are far better than coils for hauling, short of air bags I think my set up will do me just fine for what I intend to haul. Did C-10s come with leafs or was that specific to 20 series?

Dang, I thought I had wood. You made me look like the Asian guy in a basketball teams locker room! That is cool, I mean I have never admired another mans wood but I can't stop looking at that pic. I feel like the line out of Crocodile Dundee, "that's not a knife" is appropriate

I don't think my old girl would have been as happy if the oak was green!

Re: Stuffed Her With Wood

Before I bought my 70 (couple moths ago) this is what I would stuff my wood into.

She didn't ride right for two weeks after this haul!!! Come to think of it she still limps! LOL I blew the seal on one of her rear shocks! Wife told me to find something else to stuff my wood in lol

Anyone else want to show off their wood?

That is a lot of bush! Can't even see your wood in there. Sorry, last joke I promise.

On a serious note, I wondered how lowered trucks would handle the weight. How do you guys keep the tires from rubbing?

No way man, if I sell the camino my wife would never dress up for Halloween. Besides I bought it she got it, the Elky is her favorite so she took it. It is in the shop right now getting a new paint job.

Re: Stuffed Her With Wood

I was a little sore after that big load but I think it left my truck happy and wanting more. That's all split and stacked along side of the wood shed seasoning. After this winter it can go inside.
Nice El Camino. I can see using that "carefully",just as I treat all trucks. But,since it's your wife's I think it's best not to chance hurtin' it...especially after the new paint.
Leaf springs were an option on C/10s & C/20s. I put new coils and Air Lift air bags in a '70 C/10 I had and that worked really well. You can run the minimum pressure and it's like they're not there. Maxed out they add 1500# capacity. On a lowered truck, air suspension is the way to go for hauling. My '67 project has a 4/6 drop installed. With the 6" and no notch you need to be careful even empty. I don't want to butcher my frame so I think bags in place of springs is how I need to go so I can tow a little and haul a little.
