Understanding fuel tank relocation

Hello All,

I'm brand to to this forum and I really enjoy it! In the few days that I have been a member i have found SO MUCH helpful info. I have a 58' Apache
Name: photo 2.jpg
Views: 856
Size: 68.5 KB

I'de really like to relocate the fuel tank to the under the bed, like a ton of others. I've read a lot on here about members using mustang tanks, I searched "mustang tank", read a lot of the threads.

I'm a super greenhorn to all of this, This truck was given to me by my uncle before he passed. It runs fine, there are some things here and there that could be much better. Im so glad to have found this forum and hope that some of you will be willing to help me in my journey to fix it up. I would like to move the tank to beneath the bed of the truck, but i'm not sure WHERE to begin. I found this mustang tank on ebay It comes with a sending unit, do I need this? or do I have to get another type of unit.

Also, I already know that i'm going to need to remove the wood flooring, the actual "bed" it self, but a lot of the picture I see, and members working on an in progress project. Do I, too need to strip the rear of my truck of everything except the chasis?

Thanks for any help.

Re: Understanging fuel tank relocation

Bed comes off after removing the 8 bolts in the wood and disconnecting the wiring to the rear lights. 3-4 guys to lift it off (or a cherry picker). I believe the Mustang tanks mount on top of the cross rails so you have to remove it.

Re: Understanging fuel tank relocation

Welcome.

Another thing you need to know is that a Ford sending unit will NOT work with your stock fuel gauge AND you cannot easily put the GM 5 bolt(6?) sending unit into the Mustang tank. Fords use a ring or "collet" type retainer to hold their sending units in.

I suggest you do a search on member "Chuck Driver" and look at how he did it. Not as cheap as the Mustang tank but none of the other problems.

Re: Understanging fuel tank relocation

Awesome info here, thanks everyone! I'm going to be purchasing the custom tank that I found on Craigslist here locally. I'm picking it up this weekend. Now, I foun a 90 ohm universal sending unit on brothers. I was thinking about getting that and then using a Walbro GSL392 Universal Inline 255LPH Fuel Pump and Kit. Does this make sense? Again, totally new at this. Thanks, everyone!

Re: Understanging fuel tank relocation

In line pumps don't do as well with tanks that feed from the top like factory tanks. If your custom tank has a bottom sump/outlet, you'll probably be fine. If it does not and you want an electric pump, you might be better served getting a tank that is set up for an in tank pump since you're buying a tank anyway. I'm using a Walbro tank mount pump that was part of a kit from Tanks Inc. just because of the inline problems I've had in the past.(Holley Projection)

Re: Understanging fuel tank relocation

I too saw that tank on CL several weeks ago. Be aware that it is a STEEL tank and it is unknown if he coated it inside and out. I was concerned with premature rusting and shied away from it.

Re: Understanging fuel tank relocation

So what are you going to do to run your 0-30 ohm fuel gage?

Re: Understanging fuel tank relocation

Any options out there if you want to run the fill where the Mustang puts it (out the back) and not in the bed?
