Question Windshield Wipers on my 97 work intermitently?

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem? Seems like my wipers only work about 50% of the time. I have found that if you open the hood and bang on the black box that houses the circuit board, that sometimes makes them go. I presume it's an electrical problem...I'm wondering what I need to replace? The circuit board?

thanks for any ideas

There was a recall on some models but I don't think your truck is covered by the recall.

I have seen other vehicles not covered by the recall that have cracked solder joints on the circuit board.

If you are good with a soldering iron, it is an easy fix, otherwise replace the circuit board.

[NHTSA Recall No. 03V159/GM Recall No. 03023]

Defect: On certain minivans, pickup trucks, and sport utility vehicles with certain model-engine combinations, the windshield wiper motor may fail due to cracked solder joints on the controller circuit board. The windshield wipers could work intermittently or not at all.

Greg is right....however, we'd never know they had a problem if we didn't turn 'em on once in a while. Mine always worked when I didn't need them. But, let it rain while in traffic on the interstate....there you go.

I have re-soldered several circuit boards and it works just fine, My 95 and my brother-in-law's 93. I had the recall notice and let it time out. One of the mechanics at the Chevrolet dealer told me what to do.

Excellent advice, Mark.
