temp. guage question
i have a 68 that has the factory gauge package, the p.o. had a idiot light sending unit in it. with the key on and the wire grounded the gauge pegged.
so i put a gauge sender in. when the truck starts warming up the gauge starts climbing, when the thermostat opens the gauge is pegged, so i put a mechanical gauge in to confirm temp. 190. any ideas would be appreicated |

Did you buy the sending unit from a corner parts store or from someone that specializes in these trucks. I think the one's from the corner parts stores are wrong. see this thread:

I tried a gauge sending unit from LMC or Classic Parts, not sure which. Same thing, pegged the factory gauge. I had a SunPro still wired it to verrify temps. Tried a new sender from the local store, same thing. Realized that there is a resistor on the back of the dash cluster, it is old like everything else. So, went to Radio Shack and bought some new resistors of varying resistance. Found a 10 ohm resisitor wired in line from the sending unit gave me the proper reading. I am still running this setup; right or wrong but functional!
