How much miles did ur lsx motors have??

So I heard and read about lsx motors running great up to 300k miles. I was wondering how much miles did ur motors have when u bought em. I want to get one under 150k miles.

Re: How much miles did ur lsx motors have??

whatver you get dingle berry hone the cylinders, put in new rings, bearings and have a zero mileage short block. your most likely going to do a cam swap 9you'd be nuts if you didnt) wiht new valve springs, so while you got them heads off spend the 500 bucks and have them reconditioned..

now you have a zero mileage motor on a budget rebuild.

Re: How much miles did ur lsx motors have??

unlike the other dude, my budget build is a straight up budget build!!!! I dont have time or money to tear it all down and spend a bunch more money on all that stuff, thats why I bought my 5.3 to begin with, because their a 100K tune up engine. I got mine with 89K on it and was very pleased because I just wanted one with less than 100K.

Replace the timing chain, check your valve train (bent pushrods, wiped lifters, etc.) and rock and roll. Oil pump is cheap insurance too. No need to get too carried away, if you're going with mostly stock.

2nd that....my 5.3 has 137,000 on the clock. Good runner, but I plan to open the old gal up, for closer inspection. One other thing I might mention is valve springs....up grade to stock(stock cam ), or upgrade to cam specs, if replacing the camshaft. crazyL

Re: How much miles did ur lsx motors have??

Yeah I don't want to go too crazy with the whole tear down and rebuild...I'm on a tight budget. Although checking the timing chain and valve train isn't a bad idea...but tearin it down to the bare block is too much with my little bit of cash.

Re: How much miles did ur lsx motors have??

bought it with about 60k on the clock. I didn't even change the timing chain or oil pump...just threw the swap pan on it, biga$$ cam, pushrods and springs and ran it. Put 10k miles on in less than 3months worth of total driving under interesting conditions, no problems, better mpg than my daily, fast.

seems a little ghetto fabulous in retrospect, but my lq4 has been nothing short of excellent. Now it just needs some rod bolts, a different cam and about 12psi.....ain't nothing wrong with 600+hp stock shortblock stock heads cars.

Re: How much miles did ur lsx motors have??

<2 miles. Mine came from a totalled new Suburban. No rebuild required!! Wouldn't say it was low budget though. But its gone all over the country after putting it in 96 S10 Blazer and then my 68 C20. Towing travel trailer too. No problems from it so far. If its just local use, I'd just check the pan and valve covers for cleanliness, change the fluids and filters and maybe the plug wires, plugs and drive it to find out what kind of condition its in. They aren't hard to repull from these trucks for a rebuild if absolutely required later.

Re: How much miles did ur lsx motors have??

Mine had 7K on it.

My BIL had a 2002 Silverado 4x4 with 285K on his, he traded it in since the front suspension/drive axle needed rebuilt anyway. I dont think he ever had anything done to it but maintenance.

Re: How much miles did ur lsx motors have??

My '96 5.7 had over 200k. I was prepared to rebuild it but thought I would leave it alone and see what happened. So far I've just done the intake manifold gasket, replaced two injectors and two O2 sensors. I have about 15k miles and doing just fine.

My dad's got a '99 Silverado with roughly 250k on it. No problems at all.

There is no need to pull the heads to do a cam and valve spring swap. I have torn down a 150k mi LS1 after it injested water and hydrolocked, besides the rod poking through the oil pan... the cylinders still had perfect cross hatching, and the bearings looked good.

My brother owned a 2500HD with a 280k LQ4 and it was still running strong with no smoke.

Personally, the 5.3 I bought for my 67 had 70k mi on it, I'm just cleaning up the outside, painting the block, and sticking it in ready to go.

Re: How much miles did ur lsx motors have??

O miles. Installed a .650 dual spring/retainer/seal/keeper set and chromoly p-rod change on it with the over .600 lift cam I installed... and to remove VVT.

Still have those new, 0 mi. parts too that would work great to freshen up the top end of one of those hi mile motors....

Re: How much miles did ur lsx motors have??

My turbo 5.3 was a 150k engine...ran great and still does.

My 6.0 in the boat was a 120k engine...ran great (for miles and miles at 5500 rpm...) and still does.

My turbo 6.0 had 70k on it. ditto the above.

I just do the usual stuff: LS2 timing chain, ported stock oil pump, drilled lifter trays, dual springs and hardened pushrods if doing a cam, head gaskets and studs if doing a turbo.

Don't sweat it too much, these motors are bulletproof. No need for a teardown unless you KNOW something is wrong and needs to be fixed.

Re: How much miles did ur lsx motors have??

I was a bit nervous when mine arrived because it was so dirty on the outside, but turned out to only be valve cover gaskets, and the inside of it was very impressive how clean everything was with no build up or anything that would imply it had many miles on it. Put new top end gaskets on it and o-rings, and gonna run it.

Re: How much miles did ur lsx motors have??

76k on my 5.3L in my 68 and running good.

I have 156k on the 5.3L in my '03 suburban and it runs just fine. I'm hoping the tranny continues to hold up as I'm to the point where they start wearing out, but I don't hot rod the 'burb.

Re: How much miles did ur lsx motors have??

I emailed the guy a justchevytrucks.com and he said that I can get the lsx package(motor, trans and stand alone harness and ecu) for $1800. Only problem is shipping is really pricey(from Maine to South Dakota). This deal sounds so good but Im thinking about going with St James auto parts in Missouri since its closer and shipping would be cheaper.

Re: How much miles did ur lsx motors have??

Check out Remington auto salvage in Wisconsin. I contacted Chad, their Ebay department salesman, who dropped the listed price if I bought straight through him over the phone, instead of doing the buy it now stuff on the website, then I was able to have it shipped to work, which is a commercial address, which saved another $200 on shipping. In all, it cost only $300 to have it shipped from Wisconsin to Oregon, and they had it here in 6 days.
