Rear Main Seal?

Time to change the rms on my 83's 305. Ive heard for the 2 pc rms its not necessary to remove the engine or tranny but itd be a lot easier with them out. My plan was to just pull the engine and clean the block and bay up while its out. Would there be any problems with leaving the tranny in? Also is it necessary to remove the radiator and parking brake cables like the Chiltons manual says? When Im ready to hook up the engine hoist will I be able to just remove the carb or will removing the intake manifold be a must?

Re: Rear Main Seal?

you can pull the engine and leave the trans. you have to support it some how. yes you can leave the manifold. They do make a engine lift plate that bolts to the manifold for easier lifting.

Re: Rear Main Seal?

How bad of a job is this? Seems like things are pretty straightforward.

Re: Rear Main Seal?

For the time it takes, pull the rad too.You will have way more room too.I just got done the same thing on a 350,rear seal, front seal & related gaskets all on an engine stand.Lots easier to work on that way!! Good luck!!
