63 small rear window install

I can't search because I keep getting a "fatal error". My rear window is kicking my butt. I can't figure out how it goes in. I am putting in the stock one. Does the rubber go into the track first? Do I use adhesive? Whats the easiest way to do it?

Thanks again,

Re: 63 small rear window install

WHen I did mine, I put the rubber in the sun for a couple hours, then applied it to the window, using tape to hold it on there, then put a rope around that, in the channel that the metal from the cab would fit in. spray some silicone grease in the channel, set the window in so the bottom of the rubber is like it will be when fully installed. then have a friend push on the windows from the outside, while you slowly putt the rope from inside. then when it is all completed, install the insert into the rubber gasket.

I hope that helps you

Re: 63 small rear window install

Just did mine this weekend. Clean the pinch weld real good. Place the gasket in window, lots of wd-40 or soapy water. Place the glass in, work the gasket all the way around then more lube and the lock strip. I did not use the rope trick. I used a modern glass tool for gaskets. Took about 40 min form start to finish.

Re: 63 small rear window install

I'm curious if the chrome lock bead gave you any more grief than a plain rubber version. I'm thinking about adding the chrome bead to the rear window after the windshield trim is installed.

Re: 63 small rear window install

My buddy Brian (in the pic) did mine. He works for AAA glass. I ordered my rear gasket from Classic Parts of America and my front from Steele. Said its the 1st classic truck hes done and took him 10-15 min. He started at the bottom by the break in the gasket, did the straight piece's then worked the corners in. Had about 1" left over, so he made it as tight as possible and trimmed. Told him to make it tight in case it shrunk. The chome strip really made an impression...I like it.

Re: 63 small rear window install

This is the tool that he used to install the lock strip. The strip will go through the opening on the tool. Slide the triangle shaped head into the trim and it will feed the strip in as it opens the gasket. He used a "window pick" to work in the edges.

I've always used the rope trick.

Re: 63 small rear window install

It'll help with the gasket, but you'll still need the tool for the lock strip.

Re: 63 small rear window install

It's interesting the chrome lock-bead costs the same as the black lock-bead:

Did you ever decide to go with the chrome bead, and if so, how'd it work out for you?

Thumbs up Re: 63 small rear window install

" Place the gasket in window, lots of wd-40 or soapy water."

Good pics & ideas, 1963c-10. A glass co. right near a big auto auction sale--lots of glass work to be done in the area--amazed me when I was a kid with some of their tricks. For lube, they always used Go-Jo. I really thought that was neat.
Later in life, I began working on cars & used lots I'd learned by having watched them. Even then, there were a few butt-kickers I'd end up taking to them, about 35 miles away. First case I recall was a 1969 F-100 w'shield w/chrome insert. They did it; even they had to use all 3 men--papa & both grown sons!

Re: 63 small rear window install

I just had mine done. I tried to do it but got pissed that it wouldn't go in right. So I called a glass company and they did it along with my new front windshield.

I did decide to go with the chrome locking bead. Unfortunately I ran out of decent weather so I'm going to wait until the spring for the install. The new gasket/bead lock is currently resting warm and comfy under the bed. It should be really simple. Since my current gasket is only 10 years old and in great shape, I'm just going to pull the black bead lock out and replace it with the chrome version and leave the gasket alone.
