68 to 78 rear axle swap

Anyone know if the axles in a 78 c10 are the same length as a 68 c10? Im wanting to do a 5 lug conversion and I have a 78 donor truck

Re: 68 to 78 rear axle swap

the 68 is a little narrower, but in 70 they went to a wider axle that is exactly the same width as the 78 axle so the width will be fine as long as your talking about the whole assembly, the shafts themselves wont interchange in the housings, youll have to do some modifying on the shock mounts and perches, i personally like the wider axles because it gives it more of a hot rod look but the narrower axles let you tuck the wheels and tires better, but now days you can get a lot of different wheel back spacings to fit wheels and tires how you like them for the look youre after
