1/2 ton to 3/4 ton backing plate??
The conflicting info on this is crazy!!
I have searched disc diameter and the 1/2 ton is roughly 11 3/4 and the 3/4 is 12 1/2. Do any of the half ton backing plates work for the 3/4 ton swap?? Some say no some say yes. The calipers are the same p/n. Peterson's did an article and said you can reuse the backing plates. I will link it below. My 77 has mint backing plates I would like to reuse if possible. Any input would help Link to one article claiming you can reuse the 1/2 stuff http://www.4wheeloffroad.com/howto/3084/photo_08.html

Re: 1/2 ton to 3/4 ton backing plate??
If you are talking about the front brake backing plates on D44’s or Corp 10 bolts, yes….you must replace the backing plates to the larger ¾ ton type as they are larger in diameter. The 6 lug ½ rotor is 11.86 in diameter while the 8 lug ¾ ton rotor is 12.5. You’re probably thinking of brake calipers as those you do not need to change. Both ½ ton & ¾ ton use the same calipers
This wouldn't be the first time the 4x4 rags have been wrong.

Re: 1/2 ton to 3/4 ton backing plate??
Thanks. Love your rig btw.
after reading the size charts I thought there was no way it could work. Does anyone know the GM part number?? Apparently you can still buy them new....

Re: 1/2 ton to 3/4 ton backing plate??
supposedly 3/4 ton calipers are different piston something or other this and that. dimensionally identical to each other.
i have seen half ton pads in a 3/4 ton caliper and 8 lug rotor did not fit. wider pads so they wouldnt slip over the 8 lug rotor. can not confirm if that was a manufacturer design difference or what. hearsay i suppose. |

Re: 1/2 ton to 3/4 ton backing plate??
Not to sidetrack but...
If both 1/2 T and 3/4T calipers are the same on dana 44's.... When doing a 14 bolt rear disk swap must I use all 3/4T? It sounds like on the rotors I would use 3/4 T to match the front. But the calipers for the rear could be dana 1/2 or 3/4 ton. Could I also use 10 bolt calipers? Posted via Mobile Device

Re: 1/2 ton to 3/4 ton backing plate??
I have a set of ruff stuff specialties brackets. I have not put them on yet. I held a set of 10 bolt calipers up to them and they seemed to not line up. I will have to take another look. Only looking for dana 44 8 lug calipers limits my junk yard search immensely.

Yeah, I wouldn't bother with junkyarding for brake calipers either. You still have to deal with things like rusted or plugged bleeders, boot tears, leaks, etc. Buy some from a local parts place.
