LT1 Guages

OK...I am too cheap to buy a full set of guages for the truck that will work with the LT1...Speedo alone was over $300. I got the junkyard cluster out of a camaro, and mounted behind a glove box door. Only problem was related to the wiper and headlight switches which interfered with the cluster. I moved them down on the panel. Here is are some pics start to finish...

I was originally going to mount autometer guages in a glovebox door (copied the idea from another member...man this board is great!), but looking at near $600 for the large guages as a set, I went this route...

that is a really good idea!!!!!!! Are you going to have any problems hooking up the gas gauge (is it setup for a different resistance than the OE gauge)

I'll work on that...It makes for a handy place to put any toggle switches, etc.

The gas gauge is a little more complicated...the original sending unit would probably not work. Since I needed the high pressure for fuel injection, I had an aluminum tank built around the stock camaro sending unit/fuel pump. The guage works perfectly with that sending unit.

minibike, i was going through your webiste and i noticed that you had a steel fuel tank in your truck. Does that have a fuel pump in it? I am putting a lt1 in my truck as well and i wasnt sure if i needed that fuel pump in the gas tank because of the fuel injection. Do i? or can i just use a regular tank?

You are going to need around 50-55 psi of fuel to the engine. You will also need a return fuel line to the tank, since the fuel is fed to the engine, then regulated, and unused fuel is returned to the tank. You could probably use a external fuel pump and somehow put a return line to the stock tank, but when I looked at the cost of the pumps, etc., the cheap came out in me again. I paid $50 for the entire tank out of a camaro, adn cut out the top portion where the pump/sending unit was. I took that with a drawing to a local boat builder, and he made a tank out of aluminum for me. Be sure and have them put a baffle or two in the tank if you go this route.

boy...just a bit of a reminder for those who think that the LT1 swap is just an engine and a wiring harness.

I know on Early Classics website they have stainless tanks for sale, that are made for fuel injection, but they are like $600. I want to do it the best way since i am going to be driving it daily and i dont want any problems. Should i just go ahead and spend a little extra money and purchase the tank off of early classic? ro do what you did?

The stainless tank would probably be less likely to rupture in a crash. I can't tell you what the right thing to do is, but I had mine made for $220. Here in South Louisiana, there are lots of aluminum boat makers willing to do custom stuff like this, though.
