Ok other than removing the diff cover, is there any way to tell what gear ratio my axle is and if it is a posi or not? Numbers maybe?

did you try jacking it up and spinning the tire to see the ratio? mark the drive shaft mark the tire and spin the tire to get one full drive shaft revolution.Count how many times you spin the tire.

jack it up and roll the passenger side wheel, if the driver side moves in the same direction you have a posi (if it was not welded posi by the PO).

Pull the cover and count the teeth and see if it has a posie or not, If you have not change the fluid on it for awhile it could use it anyway.

Plus if you have not done it who knows when it was done last.

There is numbers and letter codes on one of the axle tubes. I cant remember which one. I do remember it is about 3" from where the tube is welded to the center section, usually near the top of the tube.

The letter sequence will tell you what year, gear ratio, locker or non locker.

You will have to google the code or Im sure someone on here has a book that tells that info.

the id code is on the passenger side axle tube. the 70 -72 (wide housing ) rear ends will have a 3 letter code. the 67-69( narrow housing) will have a 2 letter code. some early 70 trucks will have a narrow housing with a 2 digit code.

Isn't this only on the Dana rear ends ?

I dont know where you got that info.

Every G.M 10 bolt or 12 bolt, car or truck that I have seen has a code on the housing.

spin tire like said above. but x2 on pullin the cover and puttin in fresh gear oil..

I go with pulling the cover. I have found that many units have different gears then marked on the tube. (see the many ratio changes there on this forum)

Is there a metal tag attached to one of the cover bolts? If so its got all the info you need on it.
