auto overdrive

I have an 83 chevy truck with an automatic overdrive transmission. What kind of trouble is it to install this transmission into a 66 chevy c10?.I know I would need a column but what about the crossmember and driveshaft?

Re: auto overdrive

For starters, you will need to remove the bellhousing crossmember. As for the trans crossmember, just use the one from the '83. You will just need to drill the holes to bolt it in the frame. Once you get the trans in place, you can measure and have your driveshaft shortened. A couple of things to pay attention to. The 700R4 transmissions have what is called a TV cable. Many will tell you it is a kickdown cable....it is not. The TV stands for Throttle Valve. It is very very important that that cable is correctly connected to the throttle on your carburetor. If this is not done correctly, you will burn up that trans in a short time. Also you will need to wire in the torque converter lockup. This is also very important to trans life longevity. There are literally dozens of threads in the Engine and Drivetrain section, on how to install a 700R4.

Re: auto overdrive

Thanks so much. I will search in the engine and drivetrain section also. I thought this would be a great trans. for a 66. The cross member has already been removed so that is a plus.

Re: auto overdrive

Well the transmission is going into a truck I am going to restore after I restore the one in my shop now. I think the rearend is 373 but not for sure. Not sure on the tire size either. Someone had an auto in this truck before and the factory cross member is already been removed.

Re: auto overdrive

I could not find the tv cable on this transmission. Could it be a different overdrive transmission? The number on the tag is 82 FV 1030

Re: auto overdrive

Ok Mine is the turbo 400. Could it have a locking torque converter? I know it shifted 4 times when I drove it the other day.
