Color of parts from the factory.

I have a question about what color parts of our trucks came from the factory as. I have a 71 GMC ¾ ton 4x4 that I am going to put back to as close to stock as I can. I have been trying to do a search to see what everything looked like, but it is hard to tell from pictures. With that being said I have list of parts that I would like to know what color they were when new.

Engine= was it orange or red for a GMC?
4 speed transmission and bell housing?
I know the transfer case was a light red color. Has anyone found a powder coat color close to it? If so what color did you use?
Frame and accessory brackets where egg shell black right?

Re: Color of parts from the factory.

I hear ya. We really need a list of ALL the correct colors & shades for an FAQ type post.

I think between all the members, we could probably put together something. How about it guys?

Re: Color of parts from the factory.

That would be good. I'm just finishing a frame off, nut and bolt on my 72. I've done two mid year corvette fame offs. Getting he correct color/finish can be frustrating. Rest assured, the finishes varied by vendor. For instance you can set a bumper bracket made by two different vendors and they might have slightly different colors and sheens. And, some vendors barrel dipped vs painted. It's not uncommon for there to be five or six different blacks under the hood.

Re: Color of parts from the factory.

Having different shads of the same color is what I am trying to stay away from. If I know the right color for each part up front I can have them all coating in the same color.

Re: Color of parts from the factory.

The transfer is more like a Chrysler red if it is a new process, when I stripped my transmission it was more of a hugger red orange as was the bell housing. Other parts were either a black oxide or charcoal colored oxide(hinges springs strikers) looks to be uncoates but is. What other parts do you want to know about?

Re: Color of parts from the factory.

If the trans and bell housing are chevy orange then that makes it easy to find that color. But what about the engine in a GMC is it the same orange color?

Re: Color of parts from the factory.

There are a couple of threads already out there for this sort of thing. Here is one I started a while back, there are some good pictures in there.

Re: Color of parts from the factory.

It would be nice if we could put a chart together of various parts and what color/shade they were. Even recommendations on the best paint to duplicate them on the same chart.

Re: Color of parts from the factory.

Graham, I have looked at both of those links and most if not all of that is for chevy trucks. I am hoping someone with a GMC can tell me if anything is different for the GMC side of the house. I know that the black on the acc brackets should be the same. If not then oh well I have made my mind up that all of my under hood black will be stain black.

Bob,
It wouls be very nice to have a chart to look at.
